Designing Hyper-Aware Healthcare Facilities
At its core, the Internet of Things (IoT) is an amalgamation of machines in the physical world, logical representations of physical phenomena (such as temperature, flow, speed) acted upon by those machines, contextual data (identity, location, applications in use) generated by underlying network infrastructure, and applications that analyze, monitor, and act upon those data.
Supplementing IoT data with contextual information enables applications to become cognizant – or 'hyper-aware' – of, and responsive to, the occupants and their environment, service needs, security, and safety. The richer the set of data and context, the more adaptive the applications can become with the ultimate goal of driving positive patient outcomes. In healthcare facilities, machines and applications are focused on optimizing human activity monitoring, organizational redesign, augmented reality, human productivity, and health and safety.
